Arranging Flowers

A simple pleasure to brighten up gloomy and cold winter days.
Arranging Flowers
Arranging Flowers
There’s a reason why receiving flowers feels so special. They bring life to a dark room (or a dark mood). Watching the petals unfurl over time is almost meditative: a reminder to be patient and enjoy the slowness of life. To allow things to just naturally happen. Not forgetting the floral scent, an open invitation to spring. And flowers don’t need to be reserved for special occasions. There’s no need to wait for someone to send you some flowers through the letterbox.

So let’s not forget a pleasure as simple as picking flowers from the garden or gathering small, wild ones from a meadow, a field, a forest. Especially during a season where grey seems to be a recurring colour theme, browsing the flower markets and finding time to cut stems, arrange and admire can be the endorphin hit we all need pre-spring.

Of course, we’re not all blessed with woodlands a stone’s throw from our front door. But instead of tapping and scrolling and flowers magically arriving at your doorstep, there’s still a way to indulge in this simple, tangible pleasure.

It’s an unwritten rule that Sundays are flower market days. Perfect for scouting out local, seasonal flowers (not sure? Ask one of the vendors!). Mid-mornings spent walking down flower-lined streets, picking out bouquets and bunches, then returning home to take care of your haul. It doesn't have to be an expensive pursuit; a few carefully arranged stems can do the trick. You don't have to be an Ikebana master, just be guided by your imagination. Simply clear your coffee table, living room floor or kitchen counter. Brew a coffee. Unwrap your stems. Then get creative. Remember, herbs definitely count. Specifically: rosemary, bay leaves and sage.
